A Moment of Pause for Bucovina Ultra Rocks

We are deeply saddened to share that this year’s edition of Bucovina Ultra Rocks has been cancelled following the tragic death of a participant during the Four Summits 88K race.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 26, when a sudden and extremely violent storm struck the Giumalău area without prior warning. Despite continuous monitoring and proactive safety measures from the organizers, the localized nature of the storm made it impossible to predict. The runner was part of a group on the course and emergency services—including Mountain Rescue and the Mountain Gendarmerie—responded immediately, but were unfortunately unable to save the athlete.

The organizers made the immediate decision to suspend all races and evacuate remaining runners. The Rumble Rock 15K and all Sunday activities were also cancelled.

Our thoughts are with the runner’s family, friends, and the entire Bucovina Ultra Rocks community. We’re also sending strength to the local volunteers, safety teams, and organizers who gave everything they had in an incredibly difficult situation.

This was Bucovina Ultra Rocks’ first year in the Europe Trail Cup, and we’ve been honored to welcome this soulful, wild event into the community. Right now, we simply pause—and hold space for those affected.

With respect,
The Europe Trail Cup Team
